Saturday. 9/10. 25 days since we started riding the Great Divide Trail. 36+ miles today making it 940 miles to date. We rode from Big Springs to Warm River campground. The moose from last night were just next to our campsite over breakfast this morning. I heard a thump as the female layed down in the grass. It was cold……we think 24 degrees and we started with toe warmers, full rain gear and hats and mittens. Soon it was 50 and quite comfortable. Warm River camp is supposed to be one of the nicest forest service camp sites on the trail. It is beautiful. The river winds through the campground, there are lots of flat areas along the River, there are fly fishermen and it’s cold and clear. We arrived mid afternoon and washed ourselves, our clothes and our bikes. Blixen and Una were full of grit, grime and making a lot of bad noises. Lois’ bike too was cranky so they were all happy to be thoroughly cleaned. After a gas station food shopping stop, Todays ride took us through a coffee drive through (yeah!) and mostly flat or downhill miles, partly on a rail trail. We followed a side road a bit as the main divide trail had volcanic sand filled potholes that were really hard to pedal through. Deep sandy areas into which our tires sank. Jon and Lois have fat tires so it was a bit easier for them. We saw bear scat again today as we descended through bear gulch. At one point the tunnel was caved in and the trail skirted high above the river along the bluff with spectacular views. A large raptor had a good size fish. Maybe it was a red tail hawk. I couldn’t identify the bird, some type of hawk. We ran the gauntlet with a few cows todays but it was a great day. Tomorrow we should cross into Wyoming and begin to see the Tetons. We hope to make it to Colter Bay. Then we’ll have 4 days on the trail before the next town. Off to bed as we are getting up early in hopes of getting a big day in.
