Friday 9/9 Day 24. 36.6 miles. 904.3 in total. We entered Idaho today and had corn dogs for the first time. We packed up from the Wildlife Refuge on Upper Red Rocks Lake. It’s an expansive lake but quite shallow. More ducks than I’ve ever seen but we did not see trumpeter swans (yet!). It felt like our coldest morning yet and we all started off with lots of clothes on. A few minutes down the road we stopped and put on more! Maybe 30 degrees F when we got up and the wind from riding is chilly. The views today were rangeland and mountains. We crossed a continental divide called Red Rock Pass today and did a new divide crossings dance with John and Lois and a couple of mooing cows. We passed Henry’s Lake and stopped at the RV park for cocoa, and a neck warmer for Tara as she was quite cold last night. We did have to detour due to the Sawtell Peak fire. Creative and flexible adventuring! Tara had a minor rack issue early today with a screw loose (same issue I had 2 days ago) but perhaps everyone out here has a screw loose! The reroute brought us to the corn dog truck! Mmmmmm. Any food is good when you pedal your ass off every day!!! We stopped at the gas station/grocery for a few supplies - tortillas, cheese, chips, apple, bag-o-salad ($0.49 because it expired today!)made it to Big Springs campsite before 4 pm so we had time for a bit of downtime- washing ourselves and shorts under the spigot before dinner. The river begins here with springs pouring out of the ground- quite impressive. 400,000 gallons every day! We have some planning to do as the next six days have bears and few resupply places. WE will cross into Wyoming in 2 days. We walked a bit tonight to see the springs and an historic cabin. We saw a female moose with twins feeding in the headwaters. It is a constant 53 degrees year round. It was a Great day - how could it not be when you’ve had a corn dog?!
