Saturday 9/30. Butte KOA to Beaver Dam 39.2 miles, 650 miles total. Day 18. We met meet amazing and generous people on our bikes. Last night we had sushi at a steak and sushi restaurant and the waitress let us bring our bicycles inside the restaurant. Tyson in the purple jeep gave us lettuce grown vertically by his neighbor in Calgary. Tyson was a traveling with his dog, Po, and going to pick up his wife in Phoenix. They are taking a month to travel the back roads of this area. We got a later start as we we’re enjoying chatting with Tyson, whom we met yesterday afternoon. We rode a bike path for 2 miles to return to the route. We stopped at Ace hardware to buy fuel for the stove. We road up through Thompson park, stopping at the bottom of the climb to wet out arm warmers and kerchiefs in a cold stream. One part of the climb I had to remove the panniers, push the bike up, and walk back down for the panniers. We met a woman on the trail who owned a bike shop in Butte. She said to reach out if we need anything. The single track on this section was awesome. Near lunch and the top of the climbing e ran into four Spaniards who only spoke Spanish. Their first question was: “do you have husbands?” The ride down through the safe brush was spectacular. The Spaniards were fast on the downhill! It was HOT at the bottom. We found a cow creek and although it was green and slimy it was COLD and we soaked our sleeves, shirts and neckerchiefs before the last climb, up to beaver dam campsite. The scenery has changed again, now with large rocks piled around the landscape. Mentally I was really challenged today, my legs are tired s as bad it was soooo hot. The campsite was great snd there is nothing like instant potatoes and tuna for dinner - and fresh lettuce for lunch!
